This is the fifth installment of a series highlighting top innovations in teaching methodologies.
To provide children with the skills they will need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world, innovative schools are implementing a wide range of curricula in order to complement classroom technology and school infrastructure.
What is a Flipped School?
Flipped classroom, or flipped learning, is an approach in which technology reverses the traditional role of classroom time. In a flipped model, rather than using classroom time to lecture to students, time is utilized to encourage individualized learning and provide one-on-one help to students, improving student-teacher interactions.
Impact on Student Learning
- The flipped classroom model frees up class time by removing direct instruction from class so that the teacher is able to supervise collaborative learning experiences, provide individual remediation and foster meta-cognitive ability by providing the opportunity for communication among diverse learners.
- A study on flipped classroom modified the presentation method for three lectures in an introductory biology course. Students were required to watch narrated PowerPoint videos and complete a worksheet before class time. In class, students participated in alternating ten-minute mini-lectures and five to seven minute active learning exercises. This led to a performance increase of 21% on exam questions related to the topics introduced outside class with videos.
Examples of Use
- At Clintondale High School teachers create three videos a week, and students watch the 5- to 7-minute videos at home. Class time is spent doing labs or interactive activities to illustrate concepts. Students receive instant feedback because teachers have more time to help students and explain difficult concepts.
- FlippedPD is a way to maximize teachers’ time for professional learning developed specifically to meet the instructional and technology integration needs of classroom teachers. It is based on a blended learning model that combines personalized and on-demand digital resources with face-to-face coaching support for technology integration to meet instructional goals.
